Modern Day Master

The modern day master with his pre-prepared plans
As he laughs in his office chair
Smoking a cigarette and drinking gin+tonic
While his secratery types up his notes.

Out the window and down a few floors
Walks a purposeless person a face in the crowd.
Shopping bags pull on his hands and arms,
And the taste of cheap coffee is still in his mouth.

Passing by in a car drives an elderly woman
With the tape player playing her favourite songs.
In 30 years time she'll be 20 years gone,
but now she's singing in her Peugeot 205.

Company comes and company knows
When it's time to leave and when it's time for those
With loneliness dwelling on their mind
To get out, get up, get on.

A father in a clothes shop tries on a pair of trousers
While his 8 year old son sits and waits.
The waist is too tight and the legs are too long
So he takes them back to the shelf.

Over the road in a small Italian restaurant
A waitress clears the table of a finished meal.
She's saving up some money for a gap year in Japan,
And smiles at her six pound tip.

By the window sits a man alone,
With tears rolling down his cheeks.
His girlfriend just walked out of his life,
before they'd even ordered their starter.

Company comes and company knows
When it's time to leave and when it's time for those
With loneliness dwelling on their mind
To get out, get up, get on.
