Nurses do not have the necessary detailed knowledge of disease and prognosis to answer accurately the question, "Am I going to die?". They can usually recognize the people who want reassurance, not truthful information. It is equally important to recognize the people who really want to know, and to see that they have an opportunity to talk about it to the physician.
The terminal stages of disease may be sad or unpleasant, but should never be painful. The choice of correct analgesic and the regime to be followed should ensure this. Even when the doctor feels that no more treatment is available, his visits to the patient will still be appreciated by the patient and his relatives. The nurse of course never reaches a stage when there is nothing more that she can do for the dying patient. Cleanliness, fresh linen, a moistened mouth, a comfortable position, freedom from pain, and an atmosphere of peace and tranquility can usually be arranged.
